circuit
A two-way path along which signals can be sent between two or more
points. See also channel.
code
A number or symbol used to represent some piece of information in a
compact or easily processed form.
command
A communication from the user to a computer system (usually
typed from the keyboard) directing it to perform some immediate action.
command state
The state the modem is in when keyboard input is recognized
by communications software as command codes to be executed. Contrast with
terminal mode and on-line state.
communications session
The condition of being connected to and accessible
by another computer.
configuration
A list of changeable modem characteristics that must be
properly set to allow a computer to communicate with a modem.
connector
A physical device such as a plug, socket, or jack used to connect
one hardware component of a system to another.
connect time
The amount of time spent on line with an information service,
usually billed at an hourly rate.
control character
Any character assigned a numeric ASCII value inferior to
the Space character. Also, a symbol you can create by pressing one of your
computers keys while holding down the Command key. These symbols are
not usually printed, and are generally used to control screen formatting.
crosshair pointer
The tool used to select a portion of a page in a PICT or Fax
Viewer file.
