Writing-Based Input Systems

plified Chinese uses over 6, 000 characters, while Traditional Chin ese uses over 16,000
characters. These characters are used individually as words. In addition, two or three
characters can be co

phrase,
which represents a word.
Chinese characters have three levels:

used to draw th e ch aracters; co

strokes which for

and the whole character.
Note:
The wo rd

is also used to designate the root of a character.
W
riting-based input

odes are either stroke-based or radical-based:
m A stroke-based inpu t syste

defin es the basic strokes used to write Chinese characters
and ass igns the strokes to keys on the
R

an-based keyboard.
m A radical-based input syste
m
defin es the radicals used to write Chinese characters and
assigns the radicals to keys on the
R
o
m
an-based keyboard.
To e nter a character, you type the keys for the strokes or radicals in the ord er specified by th e
input
m
ode to co
m
pose the characters. This o rde r is based on the way Chinese characters
are written. To use a stroke or radical input syste
m
, you

ust know ho w to write Chinese, as
well as understand how the input

ode works.
S
troke and radical input
m
odes are popular with Chinese speakers because they are based on
writing the characters. They allow y ou to enter Chinese characters rapidly and without
converting the

to a foreign writing syste
m
, as the Pinyin input
m
ode does.
Becaus e t hese input

These inpu t

character. The li
